[NEWS] Assad Flees as Syrian Rebels Take Damascus

#1

Post by BrasSmonkey » December 8th, 2024, 2:13 am

Syria’s armed opposition says its fighters have captured the capital, Damascus, and that President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country.

The commander of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Abu Mohammed al-Julani, says all state institutions will remain under the supervision of al-Assad’s prime minister until they are handed over officially.

What comes next for the people, will it be another Iraq and Libya where chaos follows the over throw of the leaders....

He was not a nice guy, any time you have a family dynasty rule a country and not be democratically elected it stinks. The Syrian people deserve better and hopefully they will become a democracy not another Iraq, Afghanistan or Libya after the revolutions. Those places are a mess.

Assad was a ruthless bastard who used chemical weapons against his own people but I think the biggest issue here was where was Russia and Iran ??? They have both been huge supporters of Assad for years.

Russia not only has a huge air base in Syria, but its also home to Russia's ONLY warm-water naval base giving them access to the Mediterranean Sea. Loosing both these assets will be a major blow to Putin

It seems that Iran (Hezbollah) have been left decimated after their war with Israel and Russia is heavily invested in its counter offensive in Kursk (to the point where it is having to rely on North Korean soldiers) whilst at the same time throwing everything it can into Ukraine and suffering MASSIVE casualties.

I wouldn't be surprised if a back room deal was done where Russia gets to keep its naval and air bases for not supporting Assad any more. The fall was very quick and met no resistance, that seems like a preplanned scenario where all parties were on the same page. I saw an article just now that Assad agreed to step down and also one where his plane went off radar. Some pundit said maybe it was shot down, I would not be surprised as he is no use to anyone after leaving his presidency.

Overall i still think it is a good change for the Syrian people, he was not a nice guy as I mentioned earlier.

Im not so sure. There's been reports for the last week or so that Russia is withdrawing its naval assets from Syria https://www.caspiannews.com/news-detail ... 24-12-4-0/

I agree, either way this is a good thing for the Syrian people. So long as the next bunch don't get intoxicated by power and start implementing some kind of strict Islamic state like Afghanistan

That is always a concern and possible, these so called "liberators" are deeply rooted in groups that are not very nice. They might have said they will be tolerant of all religions and ethnic groups before they took over but I suspect their true colours will show in very short order. But hey who knows they might not turn Syria into another Afghanistan where minorities and women have no rights.

What the hell has British Beefeaters got to do with Syria ????? Just more @Brassy bullshit I guess

Interesting dynamic if Russia has given Assad asylum though. I would imagine that if Russia wants to negotiate access to their naval and air bases in Syria then the rebels would demand that they turn over Assad to face justice. My guess is his days are numbered

If this could happen in Syria then you have to wonder if it could be Iran next ???

This is not how dictators are overthrown, fast the military not putting up a fight, the leader being allowed to leave.... something smells to me. It all went too smoothly.

Just throwing this idea out there, Russia and Iran were the principal backers of Assad. They stepped aside, what if there was a deal done between Russia, America, turkey and Israel. Where Russia gets to keep it's bases. The very bases it was using to attack the "Terrorists" for the past 13 years. The US keeps the oil and wheat rich north, Israel takes over the security region by the Golan Heights (Which they just did today) and Turkey gets to take the areas by it's border. All four countries win out without spending any more money fighting it out. Assad well screw him he is not needed any more so we send him to Russia and he's out the way.

I do not see how the Russians ended up with security guarantees for their bases from the very people they were fighting the day after they took over.

Any thoughts on this?

The way I read it is that Russia has not got any long term guarantees on its bases, only that they would not be attacked during this revolution which makes sense if you think about it because the rebels wouldn't want to provoke Russia into launching any air strikes. Much better to take out Assad and the bases will go with him.

On top of that if Russia is withdrawing its ships from that naval base, as has been reported, then it would suggest that they are worried about loosing it. I cant honestly see that the rebels will allow Russia to keep the same bases that have been attacking them for the last 13 years

The analysis Ive seen said that Russia has been reducing its forces in Syria over the last few years because they are needed in Ukraine and that this was the reason that the rebels decided to strike now.

I guess we will have to wait and see

@brassy - go fuck yourself !
