a question for computer geeks
i have an olde compaq presario pc
10-15 years old
i have recently been getting "data dumps" that have a big blue screen and basically shut down the comuter
when that happens,
i shut down the computer before the computer dumps all the data
should i do that?
or should i let the computer automatically finish doing whatever it is doing before i shut down the computer?
thanks

I second Vikings comment, its not healthy for your computer to shut it down in the middle of a procedure.

Any place where you can start a conversation with an IT guy is a good place to start. Back in my working days I used to hit up the IT department at work. They used to walk me thru fixing what I screwed up, provide me with software copies back in the day, walked me thru upgrades by doing clean installs in a partition, advise me on what I should get based on my need, etc. lol.XpressPete wrote: ↑September 19th, 2018, 5:18 pmBest Buys has "The Geek Squad" they would be a good place to start asking for free
I once even hit up the IT guy at the library when my computer crapped out. I wasn't working at the time. He was going to fix it for me @ $20/hr and the going rate in the area was $80 when I called around. Was up in northern Wisconsin freezing my ass off at the time. I ended up selling the PC to be cannibalized to a repair place and replacing it with a new one. Turns out the hard drive had crashed and it wasn't worth fixing.

They will charge you to fix things, they are not an open charity.XpressPete wrote: ↑September 19th, 2018, 5:18 pmBest Buys has "The Geek Squad" they would be a good place to start asking for free

I have one that is 8 years old, still works but not using it. The trick is to use a power surge protector, so the they stay healthy.DeSexGuide wrote: ↑September 22nd, 2018, 8:55 am

I have a laptop with no battery, I keep t working with the power in, I never take that power off it until it has fully shut down. Just a tip, never shut down a computer during updates or uploads.

Get a battery for it, what's the point of a laptop that you can not move around with.
