I learned something the other day about the US election process which I wasn't aware of.

Apparently America has tried several times to put a cap on how much money each party can spend on elections. A lot of other countries do this to try and stop the ultra wealthy from having all the influence. They were partially successful in that the maximum any one person can donate is $3,300.00 . However both parties take advantage of a loop hole whereby corporations and billionaire superpacs can run add campaigns and events etc ON BEHALF of a candidate (in other words, they don't actually donate directly to the candidate)

This was challenged in the supreme court but it was ruled that corporations and superpacs have the same freedom of speech as individual people and therefore what they do with their money is up to them

Thats why you have these long and very expensive election campaigns in the USA

Just something I thought was interesting :-)
Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission

The SC pretty much gave corporations the right to spend and I do not see the logic in corporation with deep pockets spending on elections. Limiting campaign contributions makes sense to me. But what do i know. In the real world the bigger a donation you make the more access you have to the elected officials. I can bet that candidates have a list of donations and the more you donated gets you more ear time.
I agree. The way it is now, its rich billionaires that have the biggest say in who wins the election.

I think Australia has got it right. There its compulsory to vote which might sound like a pain in the ass but it means that candidates don't have to worry about turning out their base. Lets face it, most of this election has not been about winning people over but rather getting their base out to vote by scaring the hell out of them with apocalyptic views as to what would happen if the other side wins.

Has this happened ever before, where a president lost re-election and 4 years later won again?

Thanks I never understood your election laws, the people vote for a candidate who then collects 'electoral votes' where these people will vote for who they want. What if the electoral vote winners vote for Harris even though the people voted for Trump, is that potentially possible.

The delegates are supposed to cast electoral votes in accordance with the people's vote. However, each state has their individual election rules. If all fails and there's disputes the election can be thrown into the house where each state will receive a vote instead. If that happens it would be in the Republicans favor since most states are republican. Looks like we have trump/vance. It is what it is.

Are we screwed now that Trump's backers will make him sign on to project 2025?

I would say we are fucked in more ways than one. Republicans also have the Senate. That means they control confirmations to the courts and to the cabinet. The House is still up in the air as of now but it looks like they're keeping it as well. Things are about to take a sharp right turn with a religious twist. Welcome Christian Nationalism and long live the oligarchy. It seems we are in the Fourth Turning.

Trump when asked claimed to have nothing to do with PROJECT 2025 but if you believe that I have a bridge to sell you on the moon, the conservative evangelical crowd are going to be in heaven now.

Yep. Life as we knew it is about to drastically change. It won't be pretty. Just be glad that you're not female. My guess is that trump will be removed via the 25th amendment within the year for dementia and vance will take his place. Definitely by year 2 or 3. Musk and Thiel will be the billionaires pulling the strings from behind the curtain fleecing the working people.
