My goal was to start a free image host and after careful consideration I wanted no part of copyright violations of bad apples uploading illegal content, so I never started one up.

Legal compliance is important. Many people let it slide, thinking it will never catch up to them.

Maybe it won't. But, maybe it will.

Every ignored DMCA notices starts a 3 year clock, each piece of content can cost you as much as $150k if you pissed off the wrong person.

These days, not too many people are suing, yet. All I can tell you for sure is that laws are becoming more stringent, not less.

p.s. you may want to consider posting a DMCA policy just in case

It seems he lost interest, gave up, got sick, retired, died or some other variation. You can argue he stopped posting on the forum, the fact remains his last post was a day later and nothing since.
