Forums were more helpful in the old days
I was thinking last night how in the old days people used to help on another and post tips and help topics, that has changed. No one wants to share ideas any more, just saying

1. There were more players.
2. There was excitement and money to be made.
Today it is a lot of broke designers, hosts, coders, affiliates trying to make enough to buy a Big Mac for dinner, and if they can a fries and Coke.

The business has matured in 25 years and that is normal for any new industry

I think its a case of staying ahead of the curve. In other words, get big or get out.
We've been in this game for over 20 years and Ive seen a LOT of websites go under because they couldn't stay ahead of the curve

Valid points Jag, I think and I'm finding some new folks now a days think ideas, help or tips that are posted or given pan out the next day, it doesn't.
They don't realize this business is not the same as it was in the 90's when we could put up a geocities site or a page with a banner on it and make money, it's now a business which every part of this business takes planning, patience and time to build a base and reputation, the surfers are getting smarter and smarter, their wallets are not opening as easy as they were, like when the internet was new everyone needs to keep a eye out for the next big thing, whatever it is.
The majority of the old timers have done the time and it still pans out for them but its taken lots of work, they are careful with what is shared and have every right to be

Forums used to be easy to use, with easy-to-use categories and nominal moderators.
I used to dial in to BBs on my 14.4k modem. Those were the best of days.
People behaved, stayed on topic, posted properly and you did not have to worry about trolls.
