Natural Ice ages (and warming spells) occur over tens of thousands of years and are caused by things like changes in the earths orbit, volcanic eruptions, tectonic plate shifts etc. What we are seeing now is happening much much faster - a single human lifetime. We can go back millions of years to before the dinosaurs and not see a period of such rapid global warming as we are seeing today

A run away greenhouse effect where the world just keeps getting hotter and hotter and there is nothing we can do to stop it. The hotter it gets, the more the ice caps melt and the more the ice caps melt, the more sunlight the sea absorbs (rather than it being reflected back out to space) leading to more and more warming. Its a never ending cycle from which there is NO WAY to escape.

Thats the cost of doing nothing and thats what the world is trying to avoid
