Rishi Sunak announced general election on 4th July
Keir starmer must be popping the champagne tonight, I’ll bet my last penny a monkey could win against Sunak come 4 July.
Not that I think he’ll be any different or better but the reign of appointed Conservative pm’s has run its course.
At least the next pm will be voted into office this time not anointed by his or her party when they kick the last one out.

Yep totally agree.
I thought he would have waited until the last possible minute to call an election and maybe some good news would come along ??
He's 20 points behind in the polls so he's got absolutely no chance. This will be a bigger landslide than Blaire had against John Major

Exactly what I was thinking, why call it now when he has to know it's going to be a landslide for Labour.tacnet wrote: ↑May 22nd, 2024, 2:41 pmYep totally agree.

Surely the whole conservative party must realise they are staring down the barrel of a gunTheButcher wrote: ↑May 22nd, 2024, 2:47 pmExactly what I was thinking, why call it now when he has to know it's going to be a landslide for Labour.tacnet wrote: ↑May 22nd, 2024, 2:41 pmYep totally agree.

Im amazed they didnt call for another leadership election. OK it would have been the 3rd one this parliament but its either that or they will all be out of a job very soon.

A few thoughts crossed my mind, he may think now that the inflation news that just came out this morning would be enough to tell people over the next 6 weeks that things are turning around for the better. He might be privy to some bad economic news that has yet to be announced late in the year so why wait for that. There might be people in his party looking to call for a no confidence vote and he does not want to go down ousted by his own party. One thing I am sure is the writing is on the wall for a while, the Tories can not win an election with their dismal poll numbers so why not just go for it now and enjoy the rest of the Summer. He might have hopes of being the next ECB president or secretary general of NATO or some other high profile job.
What is obvious is while he was standing outside No 10 announcing the election news it started raining on him. Anytime I see Sunak I expect him to start crying. He has that kind of facial expression when he talks.

The election process over the UK is no where near as long as ours which is a good thing.

No matter what your opinion of Lord Cameron's political views he showed great courage and dignity for resigning after the Brexit vote passed after he had campaigned for the remain outcome. This is what true leaders do, they have conviction and character, they do not change their tune just to get another tax payer pay check.
Something sorely lacking in many politicians today.

The system of government is not the same, in parliamentary democracies the prime minister can call for an election at will.
