Now Georgia erupts in protests as new "Russia Law" is passed

Anybody seeing this ??? Its all over the news at the moment

It seems another country (Georgia) with aspirations to join the EU is being dragged towards Russia against its will

A new Russian style "Foreign Agents" bill has been passed by the government. The same law that Putin uses to crack down on his people

First Ukraine, and now Georgia

"The proposed law would require media and nongovernmental organisations and other non-profit groups to register as "pursuing the interests of a foreign power" if they receive more than 20% of funding from abroad."

I don't see why a law requiring it to be disclosed is such a big deal when it is already in place in the US and other countries. Full disclosure is good.

Not only that the UK is about to ban foreign companies from owning media outlets.
https://www.reuters.com/business/media- ... 024-03-13/

"LONDON, March 13 (Reuters) - Britain's government outlined plans on Wednesday to stop foreign states from owning newspapers, potentially giving ministers the power to block Abu Dhabi-backed RedBird IMI's bid to buy the Telegraph.
The battle over one of Britain's most famous newspapers has raised questions about the independence of the media and the role of foreign investors acquiring ownership of politically influential assets.

The Telegraph has close connections with Britain's governing Conservative Party and the political struggle for ownership of the 168-year-old newspaper is as much about power and influence as it is about money.
Stephen Parkinson, the culture minister in the House of Lords, said the government would make changes through an amendment to legislation going through parliament to prevent foreign states from having ownership of British newspapers."

I think Georgia is not looking to repeat the disaster of 2008 when they started a war against Russia, it was sort of a bad ending for them after 15 days.
Putin said a long time ago he would not let Georgia or Ukraine join nato. As I am sure you know president Monroe said in 1823 (paraphrasing) no other country can come to the America's and put up bases or try to exert an influence. Russia is not going to allow Georgia or Ukraine become nato countries. I guess you could say what is fair for the goose is good for the gander.

I read a story about this earlier. It is similar to the US law passed in the 1930's but without the imprisonment penalty.

We have to stop the illegals crossing over our border not worrying about countries passing laws that have nothing to do with us. You have a similar problem in your country on a smaller scale. But we do not have a deal with Rwanda to ship our illegals there.

I hear what you are saying but I dont believe it is a case of standing up to Russia OR securing our borders. We can easily do both.

As for our immigration issues, for once I agree with @brassmonkey. Its purely for propaganda. Last time I checked, we had one of the lowest immigration rates in Europe simply because we are an island and difficult to get to. Countries like Germany, Italy, Greece etc take far more immigrants than we do.

I cant comment on US immigration but whatever country you are in, pretty much ALL right wing politicians will campaign on the same issue - IMMIGRATION. The idea of nationalism and "keeping the foreigners out". We've seen this here in the UK with Brexit, in the US with Trump and the wall, in France, Germany, Netherlands etc. Its always the same message regardless of whether immigration is actually a problem or not. Its what wins them votes

The president of Georgia vetoed the law and did not sign it.
