this confuses me can a vps and dedicated server be a cloud server

I thought I was signing up for a dedicated server and then I was told it was a dedicated cloud server, isn't a dedicated server a server only you own well lease, no one else is on it. Then they said it is a dedicated vps server. How is this all possible.

Ask for root login
Some hosts will not give you root login incase you mess up the server but that is always a good way to find out what exactly you have.

They are trying to pull the wool over your eyes it is not a dedicated server.
