Its kinda weird when you think about it.
Every year on Nov 5th we light bonfires and let off fireworks to celebrate the burning to death of some guy called Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up parliament back in 1604

If you put it that way.
Think of having a sushi feast on Jeffrey Dahmer birthday every year

So they celebrate a guy who was in essence going to be a criminal if he had accomplished his goal?

We dont celebrate Guy Fawkes himself......we celebrate that he was caught and burned to death for his crime. We even make straw dolls (like a scarecrow) to put on the top of the fire to represent Guy Fawkes himslef
I know what your thinking and I dont get it myself. Its just some weird thing that EVERYBODY in the UK does every year.
For us, Nov 5th is Bonfire Night
