Women enjoy porn for a variety of reasons. It can be a learning opportunity, a masturbation aid, an intimacy booster, and simply a major turn-on. But it can also contain major turn-offs, from misogynistic themes to depictions of acts you're just not into.

In a small, new study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, researchers dove into the porn paradox that often dogs viewers, female viewers in particular: Good porn can be awesome, but there's always the risk of encountering something unpleasant as you search. That's why the researchers analyzed the strategies that women use to search for online porn they like, avoid content they don't, and enjoy their viewing experiences.

"We were interested in what women do to negotiate the negative content they anticipate in porn," University of Michigan researchers and study authors Sara Chadwick and Sari van Anders tell Allure. By exploring how women navigate pornography, Chadwick and van Anders wanted to highlight how women often have to work to create positive sexual experiences for themselves in the frequently male-gaze-dominated porn world.

When the authors surveyed 73 sexually diverse women between 18 and 64, participants reported that they least enjoyed porn they felt was inauthentic, not women- or queer-friendly, inconsiderate of actors' well-being, or representative of unrealistic sex and body-image standards. "In addition, heterosexual women stated that the heteronormativity of mainstream pornography was problematic because men in heterosexual scenes were often disrespectful or focused on their own pleasure," Chadwick and van Anders say. On the flip side, "queer women stated that the heteronormativity of mainstream pornography was problematic because it often featured queer women and their sexual activities in a way that was clearly designed for heterosexual male consumers."

What kinds of porn did participants report searching for?

To cope with all the turn-offs lurking in porn clips, participants had developed an arsenal of strategies. First, Chadwick and van Anders found that women chose their search terms to specifically avoid negative content: Some searched for "amateur porn" to avoid inauthenticity and find depictions of real pleasure, while some heterosexual women reported searching for "queer porn" in an effort to avoid porn stereotypes. One heterosexual participant shared her preference for watching porn featuring male partners: "I think it's because if I see this busty blonde with nothing wrong on her body, I'm just thinking, Well, that's never going be me," she said. "'And that's not [me], so why am I watching?' Because then it's just bringing up all those thoughts of, I'm never going be like that."

How did participants engage with porn once they found what they wanted to watch?

The researchers found that women were often making their own versions of porn mixtapes. "Women are not actually using pornography as it was created by a producer," Chadwick says. "What women see and read is often a personally tailored compilation of scenes that are both appealing and absent of problematic content." Rather than watch a clip as intended, women often choose specific images or scenes to focus on by skimming through a clip to create a highlight reel or they get friendly with the fast-forward button. Some women in the study even reported avoiding the video portion altogether and using porn clips exclusively as a soundtrack.

In short, women are making porn work for them. The researchers hope their findings will be a message to porn producers that while female viewers know what they want, it can be hard for them to find it. In the meantime, "We hope that our study highlights some of the many ways that women are able to find agency and pleasure in an environment that can feel hostile for them," Chadwick and van Anders say.

The bottom line: You're not alone if you have your own techniques for creating positive porn-viewing experiences. Something else to keep in mind? There are plenty of different kinds of sex-positive porn out there waiting to be discovered.

The industry dwells too much on men and neglects how much women like porn sites too

Best to ask women, second guessing is not always the best way to find out what a woman thinks
