I figured the same thing, but, after creating a sitemap.xml file and submitting it to google, the reply was discovering 33 more pages.

I also submitted to bing.

Sure can't hurt anything to have one. IMO.

It depends on the structure of your site

The google bot might only crawl the first 2 or 3 levels of your site whereas the sitemap file will list all your URLs

If google is following a sitemap.xml file then it is likely to crawl a lot deeper

Anything to get Google bots on my sites,site maps are one of the simplest ways to achieve that.

One more question if my site has more than 500 pages and the site map is only 500 entries does it hurt having a site map?

Easy when you have a few sites not if you run dozens upon dozens of blogs.

I do one when setting up a site and forget about it, let the search bots do their thing.
