I think this war was over before it started, Ukraine never had a chance and I feel sorry for all the innocent people dying.
My guess if this so called "Spring offensive" they have been talking of for months is going to cost them more lives, and the supporters will say hey buddy you gave it your best shot and failed, now go make a peace agreement. The longer it takes the less of a bargaining position Ukraine has, I wish they would do a deal now.

The sooner they sit down make a peace agreement, the less people killed, less territory lost and more chance of a deal they can sell to their people.

Just a wild guess but this thing is going to be over by the end of Summer latest early Autumn.

I love debating topics with you Adrian, we might not always agree but it's cordial unlike with some people.

Peace
Yep we do have some good debates.

I think the only chance Russia has (and i know I will probably get some push back for this) is if Trump gets into power. Trump said he would end the war on the first day. Well there is only one way to do that and that is to pull out of Nato and to give in to Putin's demands.

Even then Im not sure the rest of the world would back down

Putin can win in a week but the long term problems with the win would fuck him , a half dozen tactical nukes and he wins , nato will not throw nukes for Ukrainian

Your right, if he went nuclear the entire world would dissown him including China. Not to mention he would end up with a country devastated by nuclear fallout and pretty much useless to anybody.

I honestly believe if he tried to go nuclear, his generals would likely overthrow him. They know that they cant turn this into a nuclear war. Nato might not be willing to nuke Russia in response but you can bet that they would take the gloves off. Give Ukraine all the jets and long range missiles it needs and let it go after any Russian target it wants to. They might even put troops on the ground and make Ukraine part of Nato

No matter what Russia does, the west is NOT going to back down in this war. Just look at the G7 summit in Japan today. The 7 richest nations on earth and every single one of them has pledged to support Ukraine "for as long as it takes". Even president Zelensky is appearing in person at the summit. For Russia to win, all those countries have to loose and that's just not going to happen, whatever it takes

Not at all. I think some people are not seeing the bigger picture here. This is NOT just a border dispute between Russia and Ukraine, this is about whether a sovereign democratic country has a right to exist without fear of invasion from its authoritarian neighbour. If Putin is allowed to take Ukraine then NO democracy anywhere in the world is safe and you can bet the next one to fall will be Taiwan..... and that will REALLY fuck up the world's economy !

Some people might say "well what about what the US has done in the past ? eg Iraq ?" and they would be right. But the difference is that WE can hold our governments to account. If we dont like what they do then we can vote them out. Putin is under no such restrictions, nor is China for that matter

On a side note, in 2017 Putin unleashed a weapon of mass destruction just 30 or so miles from my house !!!. He used a deadly nerve agent (Novichoc) in Salisbury here in the UK. There are still parts of that city that a cordoned off. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/201 ... k-suspects

Then 3 years later he used the same nerve agent to try and kill the opposition leader (Alexei Navalny) but when he survived, Putin sent him to jail for 10 years ! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16057045 There's been several other attacks like this on Putin's enemies

Just think about that. Thats like Biden trying to poison Trump and if that fails, throwing Trump in prison for the rest of his life !!

I know you are joking ( hope you are) but killing millions of innocent people because you can not resolve your differences in a peaceful adult way around a negotiating table is not the solution.

Maybe if Putin stopped talking with missiles and started talking with words then we could have a negotiated peace

Cant expect Ukraine to stop doing what they are doing. They are simply defending themselves

Only surprise to me is how Russia's economy has not tanked, their currency is stronger than before this war, their exports are doing big numbers than ever. Sanctions have not done what people said they would do, and we are all helping out Ukraine with money weapons, training. Inflation is up, prices are up all across Europe and at home. How are they not collapsing did we under estimate Russia?

I wouldnt be so sure about that. Its not like Putin is going to advertise that his economy is struggling. I know he stopped publishing his GDP figures last year when the war started but the World Bank and IMF estimated it dropped by 2.1% in 2022 and is expected to drop another 2.5% this year https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/info ... n-economy/

While in the first half of 2022 Russia benefited from growing prices of fossil fuels on global markets, sanctions targeting oil imports that came into force in December 2022 have resulted in limiting Russia’s revenues.

According to the International Energy Agency, Russia’s oil revenues dropped by over a quarter in January 2023 (compared to January 2022). The drop in February was even more significant (over 40%).
