Is cloud hosting the predominant choice now or do big websites have their own dedicated servers?

Well I tend to agree because some people define a dedicated server in different ways. When I started out the company I was hosting at would give me a few server specifications, they would build it, at the time it was $2500, and they would charge $600 a month for colocation and managing. When the power would go out they would send a guy to their offices to fire up a diesel generator to power the place. If the guys who did this were not available or sleeping you would be down till morning.

They were only 40 minutes from my house and I used to go there chat with them, I had 5 servers there after a few months, basically your home pc tower, and in the Summer they would put a few attic fans in the rooms where the servers were and all the covers were off so they could cool down. I am not making this shit up, this is how it was in 1997.

My definition of a dedicated server is having an actual computer now a days they are blade servers, where no one else has sites on it but me. Imagine your own laptop or computer at home. Some people try to tell me you can have a dedicated server on a cloud, this I can not understand.

Is there a universally accepted definition for what a dedicated server is?

It depends on your traffic and server load

We have a dedicated cluster of 7 servers plus a CDN for all our media files. (3 x web servers on a load balancer, a db server, a cron server and 2 x development servers)

There is absolutely no way we could put that lot on cloud hosting

You must be spending a few bucks on that gear every month.

True. To be honest we did start off with a $20 a month hosting package on the back of a shared server. That and a $10 domain name was our only initial investment

Cloud hosting is a good option for start ups but not for heavy weight users
