how much to put as a wedding gift
My friend is getting married in August and it's fancy do,the wedding will be at the Universal Sheraton, anticipated guests about 300. The card says money in lieu of gifts, so what is a good amount to put without breaking my bank.

I am opposed to people writing in invitation cards things like we have registered here for gifts or cash instead of gift. I think it is cheap and not classy. Here is why if you decide to throw a party call it a birthday, engagement, anniversary, wedding, christening, bar mitzvah whatever the event, that is your call and if you want friends and family there you should not dictate what they have to bring as an entrance gift.
A. It's tacky.
B. If you want your friends and family to come take part in your special day then let them decide what to bring as a gify.
C. No one forced you to go spend a few hundred bucks per guest on a reception hall, restaurant, meal, drinks, flowers, music......
D. Are you doing it to make money or celebrate the event.
E. You might inconvenience people to spend more than they can comfortably afford so as not to look cheap.
I have been invited to quite a few of those things I outlined above, on top of that the dragon has gone to the bridal shower, baby shower and now the latest is gender reveal party. Like give it a break, I have friends over most weekends for dinner, i don;t say $50 or $100 minimum a head to come have fun at my home.
End of rant.

As much as you want to put and feel it is right, if you are Bill Gates you might put $100,000 if you are me I can spend $200 on a wedding gift.

How close they are and how often you see them makes the decision easy for me.
