Adding my 2 cents; Open 3rd party sites in a new window so you keep your visitor on your site after they close that page. A few sponsors do not allow this and that is their problem I will not join their program.

Why would Google care if a site is opened in a new Window, I have always said this.

It doesn't matter if you open it in the same window or in a separate window, by linking to it you are telling Google that this domain has authority and in fact you are helping it and yourself.
maybe we should also look at domain authority.
