how do you explain this

last night I walked into the den and my son was talking to his friend about getting a new bicycle pump. I was in the room about 20 minutes, my Iphone was in my pocket. My son actually searched online for air pumps. I did no such search.

Guess what I went to YouTube just now, and saw 3 ads for bicycle pumps.

Now had I searched on my phone I might be able to explain this, but I did no such search yesterday, or ever to be honest.

How do you explain this?

Its because its your IP thats being tracked

They cant use 3rd party tracking cookies anymore (not since they have been blocked by chrome, firefox etc) but there is nothing to stop them recording in their database that your IP was interested in bicycle pumps

Yes. These days everything you do is tied to your IP addess

Up until a few years ago, it was all done with 3rd party tacking cookies. So one site would write a cookie saying this person is interested in bicycle pumps and other sites would be able to read that cookie and display adverts for bicycle pumps.

Cookies are tied to an individual device so if you browsed for bicycle pumps one one device, you would NOT get the corresponding adverts on another device. Likewise if someone shared your IP, it would NOT affect your browsing.

Cookies worked wherever you were. At home, on vacation, in an airport or on any public WIFI. It was all stored on your device

However nowadays most browsers block 3rd party cookies, so they simply switch to the next best thing which is to record all your searches etc against your IP address on a huge backend database

It turns out that this is a much more powerful tool because your IP adress can tell them (approximately) where you live and from that they can deduce your average earnings, your appoximate age and even the way you are likely to vote.

Its another case where everybody wanted to ban 3rd party tracking cookies to protect their privacy, but in reality its just made things a LOT worse
