[BUSINESS] content v design
What you thinks sells, content or design of a paysite?
Getting rich takes making money, saving a nickel will not make you rich if you never make the buck

You did not mention the most important part of any sale, the traffic.

Traffic is obviously key but you can drive traffic by maximising User Engagement.
User Engagement is a combination of good content and good design. Things like loading your page fast, good navigation and putting your best content at the top of the first page
In this industry you have a split second or two to grab the users attention. Dont waste it by slapping a banner in his face hoping to drive more clicks. If all the user does is bounce straight out of your site onto another one then he is unlikely to revisit (or even remember) your site
Engage the user and he will return. Then sit back and watch your google traffic start to grow

A blog is going to be the same as any other site really. Obviously dont bother with too much text (porn surfers dont read much lol)
The only other thing i would suggest with a blog is that your best/most popular content (ie what you want to show the user first) might not necessarily be your latest content. So it might be a good idea to pin your most popular posts to the top of the page (minus the date if you can so your page doesnt look out of date)

Keep the content original not some sponsor provided images that are used hundreds of times on other sites.
