Trying to figure out when you go with a CDN so looking for feedback from people who went with a CDN as opposed to using their server for content management.

Yep we use a CDN for all our images and video files on https://www.tacamateurs.com

We use https://www.stackpath.com/

It depends on what kind of traffic you are getting ??? For us, it greatly speeds up our site pages (which in this industry is critical)

Couple of things to bear in mind :-
  • It can be a pain when you want to edit and/or change an image because it means you have to log into the CDN and purge the cache of that particular image but other than that, its well worth having
  • You'll need to make sure your SSL certificate will cover subdomains. For example, for us all our pages come from www.tacamateurs.com but our images come from cdn-w.tacamateurs.com so we needed a wildcard SSL certificate to cover tacamateurs.com and all subdomains

Hope that helps

I don't have that much content to worry about it, if I was running a tube well then I might think about it.

A handy tool for working out if you need a CDN is https://gtmetrix.com/

With it you can monitor your page load speeds from all over the world. Your site might perform great if you are accessing it from the same country its hosted in but a user acessing it from the other side of the world might be getting a completely different experience

So, for example we monitor the page load speeds of various pages on https://www.tacamateurs.com from USA (East and West coast), Canada, UK and Netherlands.

Again this really only applies if you've got a lot of traffic and/or a lot of content to deliver
