As an affiliate I want 365 day cookies but most programs hardly put a 30 day one.

Not thought about this, now that I have, it depends how you look at it. Why should the guy who sent a person to a site 1 year ago get the sale if they were going to buy a membership they would the day or next day not a year later.

The problem with having such long cookies is that people can cheat.

For example, we have come across affiliates that will open their affiliate url in a tiny iframe thus setting the cookie. In that way, they could claim every user that visits their site for the next 365 days without the user ever having seen our website.

Also it depends if the cookie can be overwritten. With us, once the cookie is set it cannot be overwritten by another affiliate until it expires (30 days). So its always the first affiliate that gets the sale and not the last one

I'd be interested to hear what other programs do though ??
