I am confused how this site checks Google pagerank (PR) when I thought Google cancelled PR years ago.

Can some body explain this?

The official announcement I recall was in 2016 when Google said they would discontinue the PageRank Toolbar. There was a lot of speculation whether Google would still use it internally and if it would come back, I have not read any reliable sources to say either of those two ever happened, so for all I know is PR is long gone.

It's probably pulling data from Moz, and/or other tools as well, it has no connection to PageRank whatsoever.

Pagerank is the foundation of Google, and it has never gone away, simply said, it's one of many factors that help rank your site, and arguably amongst the most important.
PageRank evaluates your site based on links (both backlinks and interlinks), their structure, anchor text efficiency, and do/nofollow links to mention some, so basically, everything you can think of regarding links. The reason why they've discontinued the PageRank bar is that it was easily accessible to SEO specialists, and information could be abused, so pretty much no one focused on content, but links and links alone.
Now we've got Moz, Semrush, and other tools instead that have their own "Authority" scores that are pretty much what PageRank is, or at least they try to be.

All in all, Google is the only one who has information on what PageRank scores are, and it most definitely won't come back because it creates too many headaches for them since everyone wants to manipulate the search engine and rank their shitty website. The major issue is that links were, and always will be an important metric, hence PageRank toolbar being too powerful of a tool, and they're not entirely wrong for removing it from the hands of the public IMO.
