I put in a lot of work on Tumblr over the last year, now it all went to waste.

Yea that totally sucks. These things do happen. Organic traffic is definitely priority, but social media traffic is absolutely a great supplement. I dont think social media should be anyone's core business model atleast in what we do but its a hell of a good supplementation when done right. The good thing is I am sure you learned a lot from it and were able to set up good automation tools to help you manage all of it.
