here is my thinking if the president wanted to punish countries for putting tariffs on our exports that is fine, but why target friendly countries instead of calling up their president and saying listen man you need to take off tariffs or I have no choice to add them on our end too. don't you think you need to cut friends some slack?
Good point but the trouble is, a lot of these weren't based on reciprocal tariffs. The White House published the formula Trump was using and it looks like this :-

Image

But if you unpick the formula above it boils down to simple maths: take the trade deficit for the US in goods with a particular country, divide that by the total goods imports from that country and then divide that number by two. That's why you see such huge tariffs on the poorest countries like Cambodia, Vietnam etc. The US buys a lot from those countries but obviously they can't afford to import a lot of goods from the USA. Not many people in Cambodia are shopping for Harley Davidsons lol

The president is not backing down he is actually doubling down.

Another European car maker stops exports to USA. Volkswagen's Audi. I see more European manufacturers doing the same.

"Tariffs on China set to rise to at least 104% on Wednesday, White House says"

Trump is serious about tariffs on China.

I think he might be heading for trouble with China for 3 reasons. Firstly President Xi doesn't have to worry about being re-elected (whereas Trump has midterms in 2 years) so the Chinese people are likely to take a lot more pain than the Americans. They have no choice.

Secondly there's a lot of things that America can ONLY get from China. For example, China controls around 80% of world's rare earth and they could easily stop shipping that the the USA, something they threatened to do yesterday

An thirdly, China is making trade deals all over the place as countries turn away from the USA. EU, Canada and even Japan and Korea (formerly mortal enemies of China) are all negotiating new trade deals with China.

Either way, get ready for IPhones to double in price in America LOL

The pres is raising Chinese tariffs to 125% and pausing and reducing the tariffs on other countries.

"The tariff tit-for-tat between the U.S. and China escalated again Wednesday, with President Donald Trump saying that he is immediately raising the tariffs on Chinese goods to 125% over Beijing’s "lack of respect" toward America, while pausing and lowering reciprocal tariffs on other countries."

This is exactly what the world needs, the most powerful man in office to flip flop on his decisions. I bet half if not most countries are rolling their eyes saying what a joker.

True. I doubt any country is going to rely on a trade deal with the US after this. And then there's the big tech companies like Apple investing billions to move their manufacturing and supply chains out of China.....and next week it could it could all be off

Something doesn't smell right here. Early yesterday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social "Great time to buy". Then hours later he announced the 90 day pause on the tariffs and the stock market shot up.

Im not suggesting Trump himself is involved but it wouldn't surprise me if we find that some of his inner circle made large bets on the stock market knowing that he was about to announce a pause in the tariffs. That's insider trading which is illegal

He has a positive outlook and thinks everything he does is great and fantastic. He was just putting out a good vibe to tell people go spend, invest, nothing sinister haters try to find a problem in what he says for no reason.
