Incredible light show last night all across the uk. First time in 20 years we have seen the northern lights after a particularly big solar storm

Its caused by a solar flare. Because the sun is made of plasma (rather than solid rock like the earth) it doesn't all rotate at the same speed. The equator spins round faster than the poles for example. This causes its magnetic field to get twisted like a rubber band. Every so often, the rubber band snaps and a solar flare occurs. Billions of tons of charged particles get spat out into space and the earths magnetic field channels those particles to our northern and southern poles producing the aurora borealis (northern lights) or the aurora australis (southern lights)
Thats why we normaly only see the aurora near the poles but this was such a big flare that they could be seen almost all over the globe

We had the total solar eclipse and now this in 2024, that is rare.

Thats a good point.webcamhostess wrote: ↑May 13th, 2024, 4:48 amWe had the total solar eclipse and now this in 2024, that is rare.
I didn't realise this but apparently this year, 2024/25 we are in the solar maximum. The sun has an 11 year cycle where solar activity rises and falls and right now its nearing its peak so we may well see more of these light shows
I find all this stuff fascinating LOL

Yep me too. They say its unlikely but one big solar flare could take out a few internet or GPS satellites and throw us back to the stoneage.urbanlegend wrote: ↑May 13th, 2024, 8:02 pmtacnet wrote: ↑May 13th, 2024, 7:18 pmThats a good point.webcamhostess wrote: ↑May 13th, 2024, 4:48 amWe had the total solar eclipse and now this in 2024, that is rare.

If you think about it, 11 years ago we weren't nearly as reliant on the internet as we are today

Just saw on the news. Apparently the sun spots that created these northern lights will have rotated back round to face the earth in around 2 weeks and scientists are saying we could have another show then
