All major sites do this, not necessarily block but redirect the user depending on where they are coming from.

https://www.maxmind.com is one of the main ones for this. You can do it with just a few lines of javascript code on your page

Why block ANY country ? Even if they cant join your site, they can still drive traffic. They still count as click throughs from google and will therefore increas your page rank

Geo IP blocking can really slow down your site so only do it when absolutely necessary

We've only ever blocked countries at the request of the webmodel, and ONLY for their pages (ie Incase they dont want anybody they know to see their site)

I agree on both points and tried blocking using IP's at one time then gave up.
