The best option for backups has been mentioned; get a cheap VPS or dedicated server (depending on how much space you need) and do a scheduled rsync to it to dump your files. The number of historical backups you should keep depends on how often you add or update content on your site. A really static site needs fewer historical backups than something with fresh daily content. If you run the cron once daily, once weekly, and once monthly you should have something to work with in the event of catastrophic data loss on your main server. You can get a few other uses out of your backup server such as using it for DNS or for uptime monitoring of your primary server.

One of the reasons you want to keep more than one copy of your data is so that you can restore even in the event of a bad or missing backup. A bad or missing backup is usually the result of some technical issue; perhaps a network issue or maybe the server reboots during the backup. But a bad backup can also be the result of your site getting hacked. I've definitely seen my share of sites get hacked and, when the evening backup runs, it writes over the good version with the hacked version. It happens and it is totally avoidable with a little planning.

I would generally recommend that you host your backups with a different hosting company than your site; preferably even in a different city. The reasons are fairly self explanatory, if your host goes under or suffers a connectivity issue you still have a life line. The reason I would recommend a different city is to ensure your data survives an extreme event. In any given city there are usually a small handful of buildings hosting the lion's share of the datacenter space in town. While these buildings are extremely resilient to disaster, they're not immune to extreme dangers like nuclear attack or earth quakes. Every once in a while you hear about one flooding during a hurricane. Again, totally avoidable headache.

If you want to avoid running your own backup server, there are plenty of places (such as myself *cough*) that sell FTP based backup space. Usually you pay a little more per GB but you don't have to worry about stuff like OS updates or securing your backup server. So there's a tradeoff there of work/price. Not a big tradeoff, but a tradeoff.

I'm guessing you'll need to have Rsync on the server to accomplish this, is this correct.

Not impressed with the lack of back up hosting names in this thread.

Sorry, just now saw this. Thank you for the kind words. We sell a 10GB FTP backup plan for $10/month.
