If your link list is going to rank sites by traffic (which most of them do) then I would be VERY careful about all the fake bot traffic that is out there

They basically run a script that that pings your site over and over. It looks like legit traffic all from different IP addresses, different browsers, different operating systems etc. They even go so far as to ping one or two of your internal links so it looks like a user is clicking on your site.

Very difficult to spot. We've had to kick out dozens of link trades because of this.

A long time ago, there were a lot more blog directories, and some of them sucked with how the ranking system worked with uniques. So, on the ones where each top spot would give decent traffic, I would open the directory to my link, then middle mouse clicked it to open in a new tab like 100 times real quick, waited a minute, then closed everything. After a few times, I got the top spot for that niche and overall traffic on the home pages. ...I miss those days lol.

Yep autorank used to fall for that one

Nowadays its an app that they simply leave running in the background. They give it a list of links to ping and it just sits there pinging links through hundreds of different proxy servers. All the traffic looks totally legit but then you go look at the referral page and find your link isnt even on there or if it is, its way down the bottom

Last time i cleaned up our link list i found around 2 - 3k a day of fake traffic

This is an old post in the event some one misses the date, I tried and it was not easy to get honest trades, so my advice to any one new starting a link list is to not bother.

Whenever I start a new site I just redirect all my 404 to it for a week or 2.

Link lists were very effective back in the day, today they are a relic from the past with no use.
