Do bots visting your site actually show up as visitors or are they pointless to traffic ranking

It depends on the bot. Most mainstream bots (ie google, bing, baidu etc) announce themselves in the headers and are usually filtered out by most traffic systems

However, there's a LOT more fake bots about now and they DO show up as hits to your site.

This was the problem with Alexa. Many of the top ranking sites were simply using fake bots to boost their hits and there was no way for Alexa to filter them out.

well with a large site in the top 10k probably past 50k it would not matter. the person running alexa did not really care.

By "garbage" traffic, I mean that it was all bot traffic that neither alexa nor any other traffic ranking site is going to be able to filter out. Thats why they closed it

not all of it because they started blacklisting proxies by using databases. and scraping them.
