I use rss feeds for all my blogs and add manual posts when I have the time

What I used to do was make a base blog that I made handwritten posts on with multiple categories and tags, usually by paysite name, niche and performer names plus tags. Then used the rss for that one blog to post to multiple other blogs depending on those categories. A couple of those blogs could feed a few hundred for me easily.
Not sure if that method will be as effective these days or not, though.

As far as managing them, everyone's different. Some do well with spreadsheets, some suck at keeping up on those, and some prefer completely different methods like just using default wp multisite pages to track them.

I know of no way to change banner ads across a blog network on various domains.

you need to clarify what exactly you mean if it is not rss feeds.

I am trying to figure out how to update all plugins and themes fast not having to log in to each blog.

The quickest way to update things across all blogs the easy way is to make a ton of subfolder/subdomain blogs on the same domain. :p

you're obviously going for the volume as opposed to the niched quality hand written approach, so go with rss feeds.
