There's a reason why most of the world abolished tariffs almost 50 years ago !

And Im sorry but when Trump slaps a 50% tariff on Brazil because they are prosecuting Trump's old buddy and far right wing President, Bolsanaro because he tried to overturn an election. That's NOT some super genius trade strategy that us mere mortals wouldn't understand. That's Trump using the power of the presidency to try and get his old pal off the hook whilst getting the American people to pay for it

And one other point - Have you noticed how all this talk of America's trade deficits only refers to products ???? There's a reason for that and its because America has a MASSIVE trade surplus with most countries when it comes to services, especially digital, financial and entertainment services. Far from being a poor victim that's been ripped off by the rest of the world all these years because of tariffs, America is the world's high tech services POWERHOUSE and is one of the main reasons why they are, far and away, the richest country in the world

I'm losing track from one minute to the next how much, when and which countries trump is putting, holding off , raising the tariffs.

I just saw on the bbc.com site he raised the tariffs on Canada from 25 to 35%

https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cpqvdxzwv22t

I actually thought Trump would be the best choice for president in 2020 based on what he was campaigning on. Ending the Gaza and Ukraine wars, ending and no starting new middle east wars. Fixing the migrant crisis on the southern border, rebuilding the economy and infrastructure. But I'm confused ( picking my words carefully) why he keeps doing the opposite of what he ran on in many instances. Plus this tariff and sanctions every day is confusing the heck out of me and I am sure a lot of people.

I hope he knwos what he's doing because he's putting tariffs and sanctions of not only "unfriendly" countries but nearly every country. How can any business plan their production, sales, global market targets if they don;t know what might happen tomorrow.

Someone please explain this to me, does he have a grand plan or is it just a desperate man trying to bully everyone into conforming to his whip?

I think a lot of the problem is the people around him. At least in his first term he had people with government experience who were prepared to tell him "NO". This time round he has surrounded himself with a bunch of TV personalities with absolutely NO experience and who go along with every crazy idea he comes up with.

"Trump fires labor statistics chief hours after data showed jobs growth slowed"

This is just getting crazy. Statistics released today showed that jobs growth fell significantly this summer due to Trump's tariffs. So what does Trump do ???

He fires the government official in charge of labor statistics !!! Another brilliant solution to a major economic problem

Trump is handing the world to China on a plate ! China (Not the US) is now the largest trading partner for over 120 countries and that number is set to grow.

As Trump throws out his chaotic on-again, off-again, punish everybody tariffs, more and more countries are turning to China as a more reliable and stable trading partner. These countries include the EU, Canada, UK, Japan, most of Africa and many others

And what's worse, China is investing in its FUTURE. That have already positioned themselves as the world leader in renewable energy technology (batteries, EVs, Solar Panels etc). Something that the world is going to need more and more of in the coming years. Whereas Trump has just scrapped ALL investment in renewable energy and so the US is going to have NOTHING to offer in what most analysts say will be the biggest growth industry of the next decade

If Trump continues on this wild "if it moves, slap a tariff on it" ride then he's going to find the US isolated and China gladly picking up the pieces

Tariffs are a tool.

the psychology, strategies, etc behind the use of tariffs is too much for the average person to comprehend.

All we should do is wait and watch and see what happens.

At least here, the benefits out weigh the cost that does make it to us.

Other countries are costing America billion a day, it is about time, they all paid attention to what the impact is and adjust their tariffs.
America had some of the lowest tariffs in the world until recently.
All that assuming the countries he tariffs end up paying for them not us buying their goods, do you agree?
In the end it will be a little of both.

However, if the tariffs from other countries lower to match and be fair, then in the end some prices for USA will go up, many will go down.
The goal is to equalize the tariffs. So far that is what is happening.

The most important part (for Americans) will be that American products will once again be available world wide without Americans paying those tariffs that already exist or not being able to business at all with some countries due to the current and previous tariffs.

Let us all remember that historically ALL the other countries have ridiculously high tariffs on America. High enough to keep America from doing business, certain types, at all.
When you look at just the average tariff between countries you can not see the entire picture. Consider the full impact of the market. Is the tariff affecting a million a year industry or a billion a month industry.

Equalizing the tariff discrepancy will / should help the world become a better place.

Seriously, why are we paying cheap prices where people are slaves. Do you want to pay less and support slavery or pay more and stop the support of slavery?
Call it what you will, if you are not aware of the mass world wide slavery, forced labor, etc.
Hell, America is just recently becoming aware of the child slavery here, sex and otherwise.

Research the historical work conditions of the Apple phone manufacturing in [hina.

A lot of companies will just move location to where they actually sale their products. While this might hurt where they left it will most certainly help where ever they go.

Another Side benefit of all this is less fossil fuels might be used to transport products and goods.

I am willing to pay more in the interim, while this is all worked out.

The claim that most of the world abolished tariffs 50 years ago is misleading. Tariffs remain widely used globally, though reduced in many cases through trade agreements like GATT and WTO frameworks since the 1940s. Data from the World Bank shows global average tariff rates dropped from ~10% in the 1980s to ~2-4% today, but tariffs persist, especially in developing nations and specific sectors like agriculture. They’re tools for protecting domestic industries, raising revenue, or countering unfair trade practices. Completely abolishing them is rare due to economic and political realities.

Global averages can obscure important details, especially when tariffs vary widely by country, industry, and product.
Look at tariff ranges and their economic impacts, including dollar amounts where possible, and address whether tariffs can effectively block trade for some countries.

The WTO’s 2024 World Tariff Profiles highlights tariffs on critical minerals like cobalt, graphite, and lithium (key for EV batteries). Tariffs range from 0% in some free-trade zones to 10-15% in countries like India and Brazil, impacting a $50 billion global battery market

A 5% tariff on a $1 million industry adds $50,000 in costs annually. For example, a niche agricultural product like specialty coffee imported to the EU might face a 7.5% tariff, adding $75,000 per $1 million of imports. This can strain small exporters but is rarely prohibitive.

A 10% tariff on a $1 billion monthly import industry (e.g., electronics from China to the US) adds $100 million in monthly costs. The US’s 2025 tariffs of 44% on Chinese goods could add $440 million per $1 billion of monthly imports, significantly affecting industries like consumer electronics ($500 billion global trade in 2024)

In 2018-2019, US tariffs of 25% on $200 billion of Chinese goods (e.g., machinery, electronics) added approximately $50 billion in annual costs to importers, some of which were passed to consumers, raising prices by 0.4% on average.

0.4% equals so not even half a penny. most of you should stop crying about the increase in prices. HALF A PENNY increase on average.

The EU’s 70% zero-tariff import share in 2018 (meaning 70% of imports faced no tariffs) shows how trade agreements reduce costs, but high tariffs on specific goods like food (up to 20%) still add billions in costs to a $1.5 trillion food import market
This zero-tariff is what makes the average tariff percentage artificially lower than it really is. When you add a lot of zeros when calculating an average, the average is misleading low.

tariffs can be so high that they effectively prevent trade, especially for smaller or less competitive economies.

Developing countries with high tariffs (e.g., India’s 26% on certain goods) protect local industries but limit access to affordable imports, impacting consumers and industries reliant on foreign inputs.

More to consider than just tariffs.
Non-tariff measures (NTMs) like quotas or sanitary standards can act as de facto trade bans. For example, strict EU regulations on agricultural imports effectively block some African exporters unable to meet compliance costs, even if tariffs are low.

The Tacnet's claim that “most of the world abolished tariffs almost 50 years ago” is inaccurate.
Tariffs persist globally!

Honestly, WTF should I care about your country and YOUR costs, when MY country has been paying way more to help your country since before WWII!

What America is attempting to do is clean up the crew and point the ship in the correct direction.

If that hurts YOU and even me in the mean time, so be it.

I am sweaty and dirty from cleaning up my work area and yard today. That is what happens when you want progress.

The system is not perfect.
We have all been going in the wrong direction for years.

I think we are, minimally, attempting, to go in a better direction.
Changing directions is difficult, especially for the comprehensively challenged.

Most people can not see the forest for the trees.
While people like me can see the mycelium.

If you can not comprehend what that means, ask an AI to briefly explain it to you in short sentence with small words.

The US average tariff rate is now at 18.9%. The highest its been in over 50 years and up from just 2% in 2024

Most economists suggest that it will take 2 to 3 months for consumers to start to feel this as companies run out their pre-tariff stockpiles.

Either Trump is a genius or is going to ruin our economy, let's hope he is the former.

or none of you are smart enough to see what is going on and why?
hoping he is the genius is all we can do

he started with less than 400 million and he is worth what now? and we are second guessing him?
and some of you are still believing the lying media. read the real reports.
oh yeah it seems now they are finding out the people making the reports might be faking them.
kind of like they were during Bidden?

He is making deals.

It will take years for the full effects to be know and even then, they will lie to us.

He is not attempting to make it better for any country except the US.

Does not really matter what people OUTSIDE the US think or how it affects them.

Just remember, most of you are protected by the US TAX dollar.

So maybe get supportive and PRAY that he is a genius and that his methods will help more than just the US.

He does want to and is working on making the world a safer place.
However, like ME, he is tired of US paying to protect YOU for free and YOU making money off us to boot. (not talking to you butch)

Time for everyone to pay their fair share. Even if it starts with ME.
