[NEWS] House Passes ‘Laken Riley Act’!!!
The House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act on Tuesday morning despite opposition from 159 Democrats. The legislation requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to take into custody illegal aliens arrested, charged, or convicted for burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting.
All present House Republicans voted in favor of the Laken Riley Act which is named after the 22-year-old nursing student who was brutally murdered last year in Athens, Georgia, by an illegal alien released into the United States interior.
Months before Riley’s murder, Jose Antonio Ibarra was issued a citation for shoplifting in Athens and was later issued a bench warrant for failing to appear in court on those charges. Despite the charge, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did not take him into custody.
The Laken Riley Act would require DHS to take into custody illegal aliens arrested, charged, or convicted for burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting.
While 48 House Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the Laken Riley Act, 159 Democrats voted against the legislation.
Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA), who introduced the Laken Riley Act, wrote on X that he is thankful the legislation passed and hopes the Senate does the same.
“I’m thankful that the House passed the Laken Riley Act in an overwhelmingly bipartisan manner,” Collins wrote. “No family should have to go through what Laken’s has endured. It’s now up to the Senate to work together to put this crucial legislation on President Trump’s desk.”
Last year, Senate Democrats twice blocked the Laken Riley Act from being brought to the Senate floor in the hopes of never having to oppose the legislation publicly.

Someone please explain to me how anyone can be against
"The legislation requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to take into custody illegal aliens arrested, charged, or convicted for burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting."
Any legal individual who does those things would get arrested and charged of a crime, so what is the hang up. I think it is sound legislation.

Isn't it already the law that when you are an illegal and get caught you will get arrested and deported?

I totally agree that this is sound legislation and should have been done a long time ago.TheButcher wrote: ↑January 10th, 2025, 5:43 pmSomeone please explain to me how anyone can be against

But apparently there is one slight flaw in the way its written and that is the word "arrested" because it opens it up to blackmail even if the charges are dropped. For example, I could go up to an undocumented immigrant and say "give me $1000 or I will tell the police you assaulted me". The police would immediately arrest him on suspicion of assault and he would be deported. Even though the charges would later be dropped
Don't get me wrong. I think America has every right to deport illegal aliens, especially those charged or convicted of a crime. But you have to make sure the legislation cant be abused

Fair point and I had not thought of the abuse that might happen, I agree some degree of abuse might occur and not just by ordinary people and even potentially by crooked law enforcers. That said you have to stop illegals entering any country, they want to come to a country let them apply through the legal process.tacnet wrote: ↑January 25th, 2025, 6:04 pmI totally agree that this is sound legislation and should have been done a long time ago.TheButcher wrote: ↑January 10th, 2025, 5:43 pmSomeone please explain to me how anyone can be against

I see illegal immigration the same way as some one breaking into your house, thrashing the furniture, raping your wife and you have no powr to throw him out.
