Australia passes ban for people under 16 to have social media accounts
Australia passes ban for people under 16 to have social media accounts, wow this sucks.
https://globalnews.ca/news/10892575/aus ... lds-first/
"A social media ban for children under 16 passed the Australian Senate Thursday and will soon become a world-first law.
The law will make platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars (C$45.5 million) for systemic failures to prevent children younger than 16 from holding accounts.
The Senate passed the bill 34 votes to 19. The House of Representatives on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved the legislation by 102 votes to 13.
The House has yet to endorse opposition amendments made in the Senate. But that is a formality since the government has already agreed they will pass.
The platforms will have one year to work out how they could implement the ban before penalties are enforced."

I think it is down right stupid, In Australia you can get a judge to grant you the right to get married at 16. You can get a learners permit in some states at 16 and in some territories you can start supervised driving at 15 years and 9 months. But they don't want you to become a social media site users.
How about parents do their job, raise their children, there are age restricted filters, how about those.
My other point is you can use social media to communicate with friends, not all kids sit around the telly with their parents, some come from toxic families and use social media to reach out to others.
This is a very bad law and one that does nothing for kids or free speech.
Please don't tell me some kid committed suicide or hurt themselves form what they saw on a social media site that is not common and should not be the justification to ban all kids online.

Once again politicians have passed a law without a single thought as to how it can be enforced or policed. They've simply said its up to the platforms to work out how to implement it
Short of everybody in Australia having to upload their passport or drivers license to prove their age, there is NO way to enforce this. And even if they do come up with a plan to implement it, VPNs will simply bypass it
Parental controls is the only way to stop kids looking at harmful stuff on the internet

How is it supposed to be enforced, this seems a poorly thought out part of this.

What will implementation mean you have to upload a government issued id to verify your age, that would mean everyone has to do it including adults, that is not right. What if the database gets hacked with every online user's id.
