no shit!!! they are in all those bordering countries!!!

Israel's top army spokesman said Wednesday that Hamas cannot be eliminated, prompting a knee-jerk reaction from the government which quickly reiterated it remains committed to the Palestinian militant group's destruction.

More than eight months of war, sparked by Hamas's unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel, have failed to oust the Islamist militants from Gaza but have brought widespread devastation.

"To say that we are going to make Hamas disappear is to throw sand in people's eyes. If we don't provide an alternative, in the end, we will have Hamas," Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari told Israel's Channel 13 broadcaster.

"Hamas is an ideology, we cannot eliminate an ideology."

His comments were quickly rebuffed by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose cabinet has stated its Gaza offensive will not end until Hamas is defeated.

"The political and security cabinet headed by Prime Minister Netanyahu defined as one of the goals of the war the destruction of Hamas' military and governmental capabilities," his office said in a statement.

"The IDF is of course committed to this."

In a separate statement on its Telegram channel, the military clarified that Hagari had addressed Hamas "as an ideology... and his statements were clear and explicit".

"Any other claim is taking the statement out of context."

The October 7 attack that triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,194 people in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.

The militants also seized 251 hostages. Of these, 116 remain in Gaza, although the army says 41 are dead.

Israel's retaliatory offensive aimed at eliminating Hamas has killed at least 37,396 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.

"Ideas are bulletproof" - Alan Moore, V for Vandetta

A major difference between Gaza and places like Iraq is when the US created a vacuum, the coalition made and effort to fill that void. Infrastructure like a constabulary and schools were put in place while coalition forces worked with locals to create order.

Not saying it's perfect, but it was an effort, and it's not the first time. Of course, the best example of filling this kind of void was the Marshall Plan after WW2.

Israel may be making things worse. They've put Palestinians on death ground1 and it's been repeated there's no plan on how to occupy this territory once the vacuum has been created. Instead, Hamas returned to turf Israel already cleared2. The IDF pulled out, and what's left of the civilians are now even more polarized and ready to side with Hamas.

There are Palestinians opposed to Hamas, and there was supposed to be some kind of effort3. Without support, training, and a way feed and shelter civilians, they'll just be in fewer supply or just give up.

Eight months of destruction, some insane number of 37,000 people killed and I saw someone say 85,000 injured. How many of those people were Hamas 1%,2%,3%?
The place is levelled what have they achieved a whole generation of people who will hate Israel, so no I can not see how Hamas can be eliminated. You kill someone's family member or members what are you going to have, hate towards you. The atrocities of October 7th were totally wrong, no one can justify that. I remember seeing the news on Foxnews and I was like what the hell. It was disgusting and sad wrapped up in one words can not explain how horrified I was.

I knew right away Israel must and will retaliate. Any country would do a counter strike but cutting off food, water, electricity, carpet bombing the whole population to get a group of terrorists is wrong. Maqua as you said not all Palestinians are hamas, I am sure a big portion of them want nothing to do with hamas and wish they would be eliminated but now Israel has created a bigger monster where some other group will emerge who will try get revenge.

War is always a result of dimplomacy gone wrong, this is not going to make anyone safer, assuming it does not lead to a regional or even world war. Someone has to sit these people down negotiate a solution where israel and Palestinians can live in peace and dignity. Who that person is I do not know.
