Hilary LOL tptr454 tptr454 tptr454
A recently formed tropical system has strengthened rapidly into Major Hurricane Hilary and is forecast by AccuWeather meteorologists to wander close enough to the southwestern United States to raise the likelihood of torrential rain and the potential for major flash flooding beginning this weekend and lasting into next week.

The system was dubbed a tropical storm on Wednesday morning when it developed maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. As of late Thursday night, it was found to have strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph. The powerful hurricane was located 425 miles to the south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Hilary has far exceeded the threshold of a 35 mph increase in sustained winds over a span of 24 hours to qualify for rapid strengthening.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect for a large part of Baja California Sur, Mexico, with a hurricane watch issued Thursday evening for western parts of Baja California Sur that will be closest to the track of the formidable storm.

Hilary is expected to maintain Category 4 strength on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale while spinning just off the southern tip of Mexico's Baja peninsula this weekend. A Category 4 hurricane has sustained winds of 130-156 mph.

The news said parts of California might have more rain in a few days than we get in a whole year

Unless something goes sideways, Porn Valley should handle this ok. I believe the last time we had rain like this was around February/March of 2005, which was an El Nino year. There was some damage. Virgin Records (giggity) lost their Burbank store when the roof collapsed. The retail location of Grand Opening flooded. But we got nothing compared to what regularly tears through the Las Vegas strip.

Here in Porn Valley, it's more a matter of trees coming down, power lines, and maybe some flooded houses and shops. Forecasts are calling for less than 4 inches of rain with winds of 20 miles an hour.

East of here is another matter. Hollywood and Downtown are likely to have much more rain. Las Vegas started flooding yesterday (On CSI, Grissom once commented that Vegas gets more rain than Portland, it just seems to be all at once). Palm Springs, Barstow, Baker are looking at some very heavy rain and wind. The thing is, once a hurricane crosses the beach, it begins to peter out.

On the other hand, I really would not want to be in San Diego right now, and Baja is already getting the worst.

Didn't even loose power in Porn Valley. To be candid, for August, it was actually kinda nice to have some rain and cooler weather. Things look fine here.
