Its not just bots, we put google's highest level of captcha security on our contact form (ie where you have to pick out pictures with traffic lights etc) and we are still getting spammed.

No bot could solve those captcha images so it has to be real people that are getting paid just to spam forms.

There's so much bot traffic about too which is pretty much impossible to tell from real traffic these days. Thats why alexa got closed down

I dont think we are anywhere near AI

We've been saying AI is going to take over since the 90s but what we think of as AI is just clever data mining.

In reality, we can barely build a robot that can open a door let alone take over the world or even think for itself

It depends on the bot. Most mainstream bots (ie google, bing, baidu etc) announce themselves in the headers and are usually filtered out by most traffic systems

However, there's a LOT more fake bots about now and they DO show up as hits to your site.

This was the problem with Alexa. Many of the top ranking sites were simply using fake bots to boost their hits and there was no way for Alexa to filter them out.
