"ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described social media Saturday as one of the main threats to democracy.

Erdogan's government plans to pursue legislation to criminalize spreading fake news and disinformation online, but critics say the proposed changes would tighten restrictions on free speech.

“Social media, which was described as a symbol of freedom when it first appeared, has turned into one of the main sources of threat to today’s democracy,” Erdogan said in a video message to a government-organized communications conference in Istanbul."

This guy does not know what he is talking about as usual. How can letting everyone express their opinion online or anywhere be a threat to democracy. Sure there are some untruths posted online like there is everywhere else, but who decides what is allowed and what should not be allowed online, this is where democracy and freedom of expression collapse. People who say free speech online should be restricted and monitored are the ones harming democracy.
But then again this man is not my idea of a democratic leader period. He's ruining his economy by lowering interest rates and firing people who try to raise them because he is taking his country the way of Sharia law and Muslim values over logical democratic ideas.
