[NON-BUSINESS] Electric cars

What you think of electric cars, we are all going to have to buy one soon. Charging points are my main problem, especially if you live in a condo building with 40 units and where will you plug them over night.

What I care for is the range, how fast they can be charged, reliability and longevity of the battery packs, not how fast they can scoot to 60mph which seems what every electric car manufacturer seems to be aiming for. Plus of course price, not everyone can afford a $50,000 plus car.

My brother works in R&D for this industry so i know a little bit and your right, one of the main obstacles to their take up is charging points. You can have a fast charger fitted at home but what do you do if you have on street parking ? Many European citys, for example dont have personal driveways so one solution that they are looking at is adding chargers to lamposts so you can hook up overnight in the street.

The range fear is the other big obstacle. Nowadays a full charge can get you over 250 miles which, lets face it is more than most people would drive in a day

Believe it or not, another problem they are having with electric cars is the lack of noise. The cars are so quiet that pedestrians cant hear them and there's been loads of people getting run over. Apparently they are now fitting cars with speakers so that, below a certain speed the car will make a noise when its moving

This is another issue, blind people will have a serious problem getting out ( sorry if it incorrect to use the word bling in 2021) when i grew up that is what it was called when you had no sight, not being rude or arrogant about it.

Good point. hadnt thought about blind people (yeah think we are still ok to call them blind lol)

Has anybody driven an electric car yet ? i drove my brothers Jaguar I-Pace the other day and i was bloody amazed how quick it was. The slightest brush of the accelerator and it lept like a scalded cat away from the traffic lights. Lost count of the amount of times i nearly ended up in the back seat of the guy infront :o

In July I had a Tesla Model 3 for 24 hours, they were doing a promotion here come in sign for a 24 hour test drive no deposit nothing just your driver license, nae and address. It was a white one, and thing was fast, silly fast. Build and material quality I was not too impressed with, so much of the functions are in the screen. I might be old fashioned but some things are much simpler and quicker to use the old fashioned way aka knobs. Such as radio, heating cooling, door locks .....

I bring up door locks because my son came home and said lets go for a drive (he's my son I know for a fact I do not need a dna test, because he is a car fanatic like me), not being used to the damn thing I could not figure out how to unlock the doors form inside for a few minutes.

And the other thing I did not like is the front, where internal combustion engine cars have a grill this 3 series n particular looks very bland and as if it has been driven into a wall.

These electric cars being so fast are a danger on the road, think of pedestrians. I see cars come round corners or change lanes so fast you really can miss them coming up to you.

I know it is but why do you need to go fro zero to sixty in 2 seconds, some guy who has checked his rear view mirror and is changing lanes is not even going to notice that thing fly past him.

Mercedes just released the EQS all electric flagship, this thing has a nice shape and front grill, but it's not going to be cheap.

I watched Jay Leno preview it and he had the VP of design for Mercedes Benz North America, Sylvain Wehrenert there, yes it is a very advanced car and has a much nicer front end than any Tesla. If I could afford it I would buy it when it is out.

Half the cars in California have to be non-gas powered in 2030 so the infrastructure will be in place, battery technology will become more advanced, in 5 years it will not be uncommon to have cars with 800 mile range on a single charge.

Think of the air quality we will have when they do away with diesel trucks and buses, those things make the air we breathe disgusting.

Just think of all the trades such as; muffler, tire, brake, oil change places that will disappear.
