I hate popups and have difficulty understanding the financial gain vs pissing off your users.
When I update the blogroll list on my blog I remove links to sites with popups.

I run a nice little group of sites. www.SpeedoFetish.com (main pay site), www.AussieSpeedoGuy.org (members blog site), GayMoviesPage.com (non-monetized tube site) and www.BisexualDave.com (members blog site).
Been in the industry since 2001 so something must be working since the bills are paid.

If your site has a lot of traffic then it makes sense, in the old days pop-under traffic was selling for up to $15/cpm, not joking, back in 1997 you could make $1500 selling 100K pop-unders.
Sites were scrambling to out bid each other and buy pop traffic. First it was converting, second it was pushing their counters up on their sites, giving them bragging rights. yeh some of the old timers will remember those third party counters every site had, like hitbox sextraffic.....
But if your site gets a few thousands hits a day now and you put a popunder on it, you are just wasting time and pissing off surfers. If you are in the Pornhub league then sure it makes sense but that is it.

To a certain extent, you can design the prettiest looking forum and if there are no members chatting the what is the point.

It is not the design that does it but what it offers.

We're talking Google here, they have no content of their own, all they do is index other people's sites and content. Think about out, they make a killing listing sites on the web, what a genius of an idea.

that's what porn.com and other "fake tubes" do too
they use other people's contents and get paid per click
and they use other people's ads and get paid per click
so porn.com is a fully monetized site with very little cost of band width as far as i can see
