affiliate sponsors, both small and large, let their affiliates hot link their banners

Always let them hotlink your banner. That way you can change/update it whenever you like plus i wouldnt be surprised if it gives you a bit of SEO benefit

Both great points and I always let trades hotlink my button for that simple reason.
