[BUSINESS] do 301 redirects help or break your seo
I read here on another thread about 301 redirects and think it is a trick way to redirect a domain but how about for seo, is it good, bad or indifferent.

This was used in the past by some to spoof their domain rank, it was a old black hat trick

Just use them the right way these days. The tricks don't work as well as they used to for a couple reasons.

Google will apparently follow 301 redirects without loosing link juice so long as its not too many. Think I saw somewhere that 3 or over is probably pushing it a bit
Remember you can also use mod_rewrite if its all on the same domain. That wont show as a redirect as far as google is concerned. Mod_rewrite is also VERY powerful for getting all your URL's google friendly but thats another subject
Dont bother with 302's unless its just a temporary thing
Hope that helps

Not at all, you can use 301's for as long as needed without affecting your SEO.CanadianChick wrote: ↑July 15th, 2019, 12:07 pm

Just try to avoid 301 chains (ie a page that redirects to a page that redirects to another page and so on). Anymore than 3 in a chain and you could start loosing link juice

Funny story when I first started out I used to ad the domains n my server and put an htaccess redirect to where ever I wanted the domain to forward to Then I discovered 301's.

No downside to my sites and have used a 301 for at least 6 years on many of the sites, never seen any negative impact on the search engine stuff.
