Spain’s prime minister has warned of “difficult hours ahead” in the race to contain flames near Madrid, while thousands are sheltered in the French city of Bordeaux.

• Hotter forecast: Temperatures in the hardest-hit areas will start climbing again tomorrow before reaching abnormally hot levels by midweek. Gusty winds have eased, however, and will remain light through at least Tuesday, helping firefighters as they work to increase fire containment.
