"BRUSSELS — The European Union’s unveiling of a mobile app to check people’s age online has quickly turned sour, as cybersecurity experts found glaring privacy and security problems with the code.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented the age-verification tool in Brussels on Wednesday, saying it was "technically ready" and will soon be available to use as countries move to ban kids from social media.

"It is fully open source. Everyone can check the code," von der Leyen said."

Exactly. Several countries have tried to implement age verification in the past. The UK tried it a few years back with a thing called ATVOD. The problem has always been the same, there is no single globally recognized app that websites can use to verify a users age. When the UK tried it, there were a dozen or so different systems (eg. Pornhub developed one) and depending on which system you registered your website with, dictated what users you could accept.

Its the same now. This EU app is fine for EU users but what about the rest of the world ?? And with the rise of VPNs, how do website owners know that the user is in Europe ??? If Apple did an app, then that's great for Apple users but what about Android users ??

Right now it means each website has to verify each user and porn surfers don't want to have to verify their age over and over again

I am all for an age verification app to keep minors off adult sites,a single universally accepted world wide app makes most sense, Apple would be a good option but not everybody uses an apple product, so it might be a few apps by major IT companies such as Samsung and others.
