"Living wage fee of 18% added to each dine-in check." If it is not clear on the menu do you have to pay this?

"A Georgia man shared a photo of his receipt to Instagram Threads, asking, "WTF is a living wage fee?" following dinner in mid-June.
On the bill was a $13 Reuben sandwich, a $12 burger, two sides of fries for $4 each and an 18% "living wage fee" that tacked on an additional $5.94 — bringing his total, with $1.81 in tax, to $40.75.

Below the total was a disclaimer from the unnamed restaurant saying, "Living wage fee of 18% added to each dine-in check. This fee goes directly to staff payroll and provides a living wage to our team.""

I think requiring to tip is 100% wrong. I do not buy the story that waiters do not get paid a decent wage to live on and every customer at a restaurant or bar has to tip 15-22%. That's the morn here and it you don;t put 22% they give you a dirty look. It's their job to serve tables, and honestly you go out to dinner with 4 people at any half ass place you would want to eat at costs $50 and up for just the main course, throw in an appetizer a couple of soft drinks and a real drink you are well over $100.
So you end up paying 22% on top plus 15% tax, that's $140 a person.
I don;t care if you run a restaurant, bar, dental office, grocery store, you need to factor in your cost of doing business. I once tried to give the gal at the driv thru window at McDonalds a tip she said thank you but we can not take tips. The same thing at my grocery store, I wanted to give the man a tip for bagging my stuff he said we can not accept tips. Last but not only example I had bought a barbecue, out door table and chairs, when 2 guys brought it to my car I offered them a tip they said against company policy.
So the bottom line is if you run a mom and pop restaurant build in your cost of labor into your prices. And when people say the waiter deserves a tip for taking your order and bringing you the meal, that's his fucking job. By definition a waiter takes an order and brings the food you ordered. It's no rocket science it's a very simple task.
This thread got me on a bad day, it gets me when you go to pick up food and have to pay a 20% tip, what the hell is a tp for when you stand there ask for a meal, they bag it hand it to you. Please don;t tell me restaurant workers get a low hourly wage, I already explained why the establishment should factor in the cost of labor into their prices.
I was at my dentist 3 weeks ago he did 4 fillings, $1140 , you might say that is a lot of money for his hour and 20 minutes of work, that's another wargument, but he did not expect a tip.
Peace

The worst job in a restaurant is the dish washer, think of washing so many plates and cutlery every day for a few dollars.

So that means they are not paying their workers a living wage?

I didn't realize this but there was a thing on the news the other day that the federal minimum wage in the USA is $7.25 an hour. However, in many states the minimum wage for "tipped" employees is only $2.13 an hour !! Employers are supposed to make up the difference if tips don't bring their wages up to the national minimum but many restaurant workers, for example, have to share their tips with the rest of the staff. So they still end up with less than the minimum wage

At those wages the people who work at restaurants can not afford to eat at them, how sad is that.
