The main thing that Alexa gives you is competitive analysis. So finding out what keywords your competitors are using, what share of the voice you have and what keywords you can easily rank for. where your competitors are getting their traffic from and how you stack up against them.

I wouldnt do it every month but its useful to check every now and then

I think this is where a lot of people get confused with Alexa. Alexa and your stats are two completely different things.

If you want to track your hits then use your server stats / AW stats / google analytics or whatever you prefer.

Alexa simply tells you how well you are doing compared to the rest of the world. Its perfectly plausible that your hits might go up and your alexa ranking might go down. It just depends how everybody else is doing at the time and the further down the curve you are, the more likely it is that your ranking will jump about

Alexa uses a big enough sampling to make it pretty damned accurate. You just have to remember its a RANKING system and not a STATS system

Yes. I cant see why they wouldn't ?

Their data comes from users who have the alexa toolbar installed and its obviously an automated process so I cant see how or why they would track one site more than another

True but never been a fan of installing toolbars, got burnt once in 2007 and never downloaded one again, it was not the Alexa one btw.
