This rep was promising me he will get me paid by the end of last week for my December payments, then for 3 days he is offline. I was thinking maybe he has me on offline to not reply.

You can set Skype to invisible, but not sure if you can tell on the other end or not, besides them answering while offline lol.

I use Skype a lot. There does not seem to be a way to hide from just one person. So if they are invisible they are invisible to everyone.
Invisible people show as offline. If they are offline, they are offline for everyone.

I ignore the status completely and just type away. I don't use skype for call for most people.

Their status means nothing. type in or call anytime you want. if they are truly offline, then they wont know till they turn it on. If they are invisible, they will know you are attempting to contact them.
You will not know/can not know if they are truly there or not. Unless they respond as Mike stated.

with all that I just said above.. Skype just FORCED me to update. So who knows what it does now. I say forced as when I clicked cancel and not upgrade skype just closed.

I never put any body on invisible mode. I only authorize friends and people I work with so I have no reason to ignore them
