He won't take them out and Merz knows it. Firstly it's a lot cheaper for the US to house forces in NATO countries rather than the US because they don't have to pay for the barracks etc. The host country does that.

Secondly those forces are NOT there to somehow protect Germany, they are there is to project US military power into Europe

Your not. In fact your saving money by having those forces in Europe because Europe pays for all their accommodation. Lot more expensive to have them in the US

Also, those troops are not there to protect Europe, they are there to project US power around the globe. Same reason as you have military bases all over the world.

Trump is only doing this because Merz criticized his war in Iran last week. He's literally changing the US global defense posture simply because he didn't like what someone said about him.
