"Meta Is Globally Banning Russian State Media on Its Apps, Citing ‘Foreign Interference’"

"Social media company Meta—the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—announced Monday that it will ban RT and other Russian state media from its apps worldwide, days after the State Department announced sanctions against Kremlin-coordinated news organizations.

“After careful consideration, we expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets: Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for foreign interference activity,” Meta said in a statement provided to TIME."

Between Alphabet Inc the parent company of Google that owns Youtube and Meta that owns Facebook , Instagram and WhatsApp they can control a lot of who posts what and who reads what online. Is it right well that depends on how you feel about free speech. If you have labelled certain sites as state owned or sponsored the readers are given plenty of notice. Twitter ( I know I should call it X) pwned by Elon Musk will be the winner, he has reportedly said he wants free speech on the X platform.

But if you've got a state owned media company that is (quote) “no longer merely firehoses of Russian Government propaganda and disinformation; they are engaged in covert influence activities aimed at undermining American elections and democracies, functioning like a de facto arm of Russia’s intelligence apparatus.” then surely you have to protect your own democracy ??? Especially as Russia blocked facebook and instagram over 2 years ago

Every western intelligence agency (CIA, NSA, FBI, MI5, MI6, EU INTCEN etc) has concluded that Russia in particular is trying to screw with western elections. The only question is what are you going to do about it ?

Of course twitter is not going to block RT because they are trying to get Trump elected and that's what Musk wants

I have no idea what they are trying or not trying to do, my point was Alphabet inc and Meta have the power to control access to control news and information on their respective platforms. How many other news organizations are mouth pieces for their country's government.

If the State department in the United States passes sanctions then companies have no option but to follow the rules or get fined.

In a weird odd way this is no more than the government controlling what media companies can out out there.
