Just a heads up when getting carried away in the heat of a discussion please do NOT post defamatory statements causing libel which is a liability for me the board others and yourself. If I see such posts I will delete them as I have always done on Sponsorchat.

A quick recap:

Libel is a defamatory statement that is written.
Slander is a defamatory statement that is oral.

Peace

I honestly do not care who or says or does what I always like to stay away from the edge. Why get sued for libel, let me give an example, if I call someone a thief that is a potential basis for a defamation suit. When they sue they don't just sue the person who wrote the libelous comments, they will sue the site owner, the host, the moderators and any Doe's they can so as to grab some monetary judgement.

This post I made was not directed towards anyone, was a general observation.

But, but, what if it's true? It's not libel/slander if it's true. Just sayin'

That is not the issue here, my point is about accusing people of misdeeds they have not done or calling people names.

Just to clarify, the legal requirements to sue for libel are that the person has to show a "measurable loss". That is, they have to show that they (or their brand) suffered a loss because someone publicly said something that wasn't true

So you could say "so and so is an asshole" and that's ok because its your opinion. But you cant say things like "so and so stole from me" if it isn't true as that could be considered libelous

Either way I think Butcher has a point. Better to be safe than sorry

You are correct sir, an opinion is one thing, what if I post "XYZ steals." That changes things especially when the person XYZ has deep pockets and can easily afford to sue you.
