It depends how you re-direct it
If you use a 302 re-direct then google sees that as a "temporary" redirect and the original page will still be listed
However, if you use a 301 redirect then thats a permanent switch and google will index your new page and drop the old one

why do you want to do that why not use one or the other?

see what nude.com has done, any subdomain that is not an active one on the site redirects to the root of the domain, I think that is smart.

I have said it before, pages and folders on the domain do good for seo, subdomains are considered by Google as separate entities.

Totally agree. Its far better to have one big site with lots of pages, folders, backlinks and momentum than hundreds of little sites with little or no momentum.
As for the original question about re-directing your subdomains. I suggest you use a 301 so google will index the folder and not the subdomain
Subdomains are good if you want to present different language versions of your site for example. Or maybe seperate your blog from the main site but other than that, they really dont help your SEO efforts

Either use a subdomain or directory, redirecting them makes no sense to me
