Only in LA blame the car manufacturer not the thieves
"Rather than vote in favor of a motion banning the unlawful possession of catalytic converters — a valuable automotive part — Nithya Raman, a Los Angeles councilwoman, voted against the measure and blamed car manufacturers for making the part too easy to steal.
“In this case, I think one of the things that infuriates me, is that we have a company — whatever, Toyota — who makes the Prius, that essentially has a device on their cars which is super easy to remove. It’s basically the value of a MacBook, right?” the Democratic lawmaker said.
“That is put in a place that is incredibly easy to access in your car and the thefts related to this issue have essentially — all of the costs of that — are given to us to bear instead of them [Toyota] having to manufacture a car that actually is not so easy to be stolen,” the Harvard-educated Raman added."

According to that link 4 people voted against the motion and 8 for it, so it passed. She is not the only one on the council who voted against it lol.Gaming_Mike wrote: ↑April 22nd, 2023, 11:41 amUnbelievable stupidity who votes for these people (ran out of time to edit my first post)

catalytic converter theft is on the rise and it has to be punished with jail time to make it not so lucrative for the criminals.

I can kind of see the politician's point because it ultimately benefits the manufacturers every time the catalytic converter gets stolen because guess who makes the catalytic converters? And it's true they're not cheap they are between about 1500 to 2K a pop, so if everybody who buys one of their vehicles has their catalytic converter stolen at least once that is about the equivalent of adding a couple Grand to the price tag of every vehicle sold not counting the labor cost to install a new one that you know the dealerships charge and manufacturers get a portion of as well.
That's not to say that theives are blameless, but there is some culpability and negligence in practically putting a "please steal me" sign on something that's worth about $2k without giving any means of mitigating the damage or protecting oneself
I live in LA it's true those thefts are rampant and notorious and they happen in a matter of literally 15-30 seconds those guys are in, catalytic converter is out, and they're gone and the car owners out $2,000 and has a car that won't start - and the way they are designed, there is no real way to put in place any sort of protective elements no way to block it off or make it more difficult to steal that wouldn't have a drastically negative effect on the car's ability to drive and that's clearly not out of necessity, the same component can easily fit several other adjacent locations without negatively affecting anything else while being able to have the ability to be protected from theft, that one there is some truth to, listen to Fox News and Friends rhetoric and their ill thought out cheap shots at city council members in progressive districts (because they really are desperate for something, anything at all to distract their viewer base from the train wreck the conservative party is at this point and from realizing that everything Trump has said literally everything out of his mouth since 2016 has been a lie)

Where else will you put the catalytic converter in the glove box?
Criminals will be criminals do not blame it on the car design.
